A locally governed municipal utility with deep roots in the Tennessee Valley.
Muscle Shoals Electric Board was founded in 1933 after President Roosevelt signed the Tennessee Valley Authority Act into law. Mayor George L. McBride formally requested electric service for the city on July 30, 1933, and on October 14, 1933, the first TVA power connection was made — serving approximately 24 customers in the Highland Park area.
From those 24 customers and $150 in monthly revenue, MSEB has grown into a full-service municipal utility serving the City of Muscle Shoals and the TVA Reservation in northwest Alabama — situated along the southern banks of the Tennessee River.
Today, under General Manager Matt Bernauer, MSEB delivers safe, reliable, affordable electricity to thousands of residential and commercial customers, maintaining 232 miles of line with an average load factor of 65%.
The MSEB Board meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 4:30 pm at the main office.

MSEB is one of 159 local power companies that distribute TVA-generated electricity across the Tennessee Valley region. As a TVA distributor since 1933, we work to bring you reliable, low-cost electricity generated from a diverse mix of hydro, nuclear, natural gas, and renewable energy sources.
Effective January 1, 2025, MSEB will no longer be able to make payment arrangements. Disconnection may occur after the Final Date to Pay listed on your notice. Local assistance agencies are available — see Customer Service for details.
MSEB periodically makes surplus vehicles and equipment available for public bid. Check the Surplus Property page for current listings and bid specifications.
If your service has been disconnected for non-payment, you must call (256) 386-9290 to pay and restore service. Online payments alone will not restore disconnected accounts.
Alabama law requires calling 811 before any digging project. This free service locates buried utility lines and helps prevent dangerous accidents and service outages.
